OXYTOCIN

What does it feel like? You know that feeling when you laugh so hard your tummy and cheeks hurt!? Or when you listen to a piece of music that gives you goosebumps? Or you think of a person or a moment that makes you smile on the inside and outside? THAT is Oxytocin. Oxytocin is a hormone, and it’s responsible for allowing labour to start and to progress naturally and smoothly. Oxytocin is also your body’s natural pain relief, which is why we want to allow it to be released during labour, to keep our contractions comfortable. When oxytocin is allowed to work, it’s effects are huge! So how can we allow it work?

Oxytocin is released into the body when a woman feels calm, happy, safe, loved, content. During labour, if we are feeling the opposite of these 👆panic, worry, fear, alone, then Oxytocin cannot play it’s part. This is why educating yourself, attending classes, learning tools and techniques to keep you calm and happy, and being informed on the science of labour is SO important!

Now that you know how it feels, name something that makes you feel the Oxytocin flow? For me, it’s looking at photos of my family 💛 the smell of citrus 🍊 and laughing SO hard. I just love how that feels 🥰
